Night Sky Photography Lessons

Photographing the night sky can be especially challenging. Fussing with the camera settings in the dark is difficult. Focusing the lens in particular. Beginners learn quickly that ‘infinity’ is not really infinity for a camera lens. Framing the scene if it includes terrestrial objects is rewarding, but nearly impossible to see in total darkness. But, the camera will see all those things when using long exposure times.

No lights can be on while photographing. Not only for yourself, but with respect to others that may be photographing in the same area. Sound challenging? It is. But very rewarding.

Working with a tripod is essential for DSLR and Mirrorless cameras. Some smartphones have special AI when doing long exposures. Learn how to use what you have to achieve the best possible results.

Some amount of post-processing is almost always required. That will also be covered in your lesson.

People often ask ‘what is the hardest part of night sky photography’. The real answer is getting up in the middle of the night. The weather and clouds also can cause problems.

All that said, getting a good shot of the night sky is especially rewarding. Not something you’ll do often, but something you’ll remember and talk about for a long long time.
